About Us

The Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich is the only university in Southern Germany that offers the five arts subjects in its curriculum and has brought them together in one school.

The School of Arts is part of the Faculty of History and the Arts and serves as an organisational umbrella for the following five subjects:

The School of Arts stands for high-level research and practice-oriented teaching, which is carried out in close cooperation with the major archives, museums and theatres of Munich.

A broad spectrum in research and teaching and the high level of autonomy of the individual subjects and institutes account for the special profile of the Department of the Arts. The department currently offers 20 different degree programs and ca. 4000 students are enrolled in the subjects of the department.

Sixteen professors, one assistant professor,11 private lecturers (Privatdozenten), 40 academic members of staff and 6 full-time teaching staff members, who are training to be grammar school (Gymnasium) teachers, conduct research and teach at the five institutes. A further 160 associate lecturers complete the teaching staff. Fifteen members of staff ensure that the administration and the technical support of the research and teaching run smoothly.
